Creating Translanguaging Space and Integrating Translanguaging Practices in TBLT: A Conceptual Framework

This presentation begins with an introduction to some more recent perspectives in language and linguistics, particularly the distributed view of language (Thibault, 2011) which differentiates between first-order languaging and second-order language. It will be contended that the new thinking in languaging, hence translanguaging, has important implications for second language education, especially in multilingual communities such as the Greater Bay Area. The compatibility between translanguaging and task-based language teaching (TBLT) in language education is argued, emphasising their potential synergy in language classrooms. A critical review of the challenges in implementing translanguaging in TBLT is presented, followed by a proposal for strategies to create translanguaging space (Li, 2018) and sub-spaces (Tai and Li, 2021) within the pre-, during-, and post-task stages of TBLT classrooms (Willis & Willis, 1996) to address some of these challenges. Finally, suggestions for future research directions are outlined.
